The coastal West African nation of Sierra Leone is one of the poorest
countries in the world. Maternal and child mortality rates are extremely high,
and its 5.3 million people have a life expectancy of just 38 (for men) to 41
(for women) years of age. A civil war devastated its infrastructure, killed
approximately 50,000 persons, and forced millions to seek refuge in neighboring
countries. Fueled by the illicit trade in Sierra Leone’s "blood diamonds"—so
called for their role in funding conflicts—the war lasted eleven years, and left
a brutal legacy behind. Rebel forces were known for beating, raping, and maiming
civilians, with amputation of limbs by machete their trademark. A United
Nations-backed war crimes court has since been established to try those on both
sides of the conflict responsible for these brutalities.
"...One of the Ten Topics the World Doesn't Here Enough
About" - U.N.
Today, the United Nations refer to Sierra Leone as “one of the ten topics the
world doesn't hear enough about”. It is the second poorest country in the world.
The United Nations named Sierra Leone as the world's “least livable” country,
based on its poverty and the poor quality of life that its citizens must endure.
